Embera Wounaan is segmented in the provinces of Panama and Darien. It is located between the Darien National Park and Chagres National Park. The Embera and Wounaan live in the jungles of Darien. They live in small villages of 10 to 20 houses. The area is about 4,383.6 sq km, and the average population is about 15,000 people. The original and traditional houses in Embera Wounaan have circular roofs with palm trees on top. Knowing that Embera Wounaan is located in forest areas, it rains a lot and it is very humid.

Since Embera Wounaan is a small community inside a forest, there are not many hotels. The hotels listed below are not located in Embera Wounaan, but near. The Cana Field Station is located in Darien National Park, and it is very near where the Embera and Wounaan live in. Another amazing and beautiful place to visit is he Darién national park.

The Embera – Wounaan may be a small community, yet there are many things to do. It is a great tourist place where you can enjoy the forests, animals, such as herons, eagles, butterflies, iguanas, monkeys, woodpeckers and even alligators. Some activities that you could do in the Embera - Wounaan are: Ecotourism, Sightseeing, Hiking, Bird watching, Observing the flora and fauna, and Enjoy the traditional music and dance the Embera and Wounaan create.

Local Customs

Panama has many traditions. Its festivals and celebrations, are colorful and creative. Some of the festivals held in Darien are the Festival San Juan, and the Bunde Bullerengue Festival.
l       Festival San Juan is held on the 24th of June.
In this day the chitreanos gather together to honor the birth of their saint patron San Juan.
l       Bundle and Bullerengue Festival is held on the 27th of December.
This festival is held every 27th of December to honor Jesus.

Warnings

  • It is very humid
  • There will be many mosquitoes, and insects.
  • Many wild animals in certain areas.
  • If having any allergies, make sure to bring your assigned medication.
  • Bring comfortable shoes for extreme walking and activities that may tire you.

Transportations

There are not many ways to get to the comarca Embera Wounaan, but the best way to arrive to this region is  by land or air. Land meaning car, or bus, and air meaning small planes.

Some things you are going to need when being in Darien, Embera Wounaan are : Mosquito Repelant, Sunglasses, a camera/ video camera, medicine, shorts, money, sandals, toothbrush and toothpaste,Sunscreen, hiking boots,and a cap/hat.
